Diana Szeidler-Lednitzky Instrument Specialist - Bio Electron Microscopy

Diana provides advice and support for electron microscopy and spectroscopy, including image and data collection, sample preparation, and user training.

Role

Diana oversees the basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and smooth running of the equipment. She is jointly responsible for:

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
  • Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM)
  • Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX)

Diana also helps with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman Spectroscopy.

She trains students for material and biological sample preparation with use of the microtome, and different chemicals and methods to fix and dehydrate samples in preparation for the Electron Microscopy techniques listed. In addition, she collaborates with industrial partners and research groups within, and beyond, the University of Bath.

Career

Diana started her career as a technician in bio-electron microscopy in the Microscopy and Analysis Suite, where she developed her expertise, transitioning to the role of Instrument Specialist in 2018. Besides running the biology and material preparation laboratory (including supervising and training students for SEM and TEM preparation), she trained students in the use of SEM, FE-SEM and EDX, and operated the FTIR and Raman.

Prior to her roles at the University of Bath, Diana first spent two years as a Biology and Physics teacher in her homeland of Hungary, followed by six years as a Biology, Chemistry and Physics technician in the UK.

Education

Diana's background is in teaching. She graduated from the Eotvos Lorand Science University of Budapest in 2004 with a BSc in Biology and Physics teaching. After several years out of education, she felt the desire to continue her studies and gained entry to Birkbeck College of London to carry out a BSc in Chemical and Molecular Biology, graduating in 2014.
