Learning Outcomes: By the end of this unit you will be able to:
  • Explain and analyse the basic methods of generation, detection and characterisation of modulated signals
  • Describe the function of source, channel and line coders in digital transmission systems
  • Describe the characteristics and relative performance of the various digital modulation schemes
  • Describe the key components of a multirate filter and their role, for example, in sample rate conversion
  • Discuss the design, realisation and applications of analogue & digital filters
The unit contributes to the following AHEP 4th edition learning outcomes: C1,C3,C4,C6.


Synopsis: This unit introduces you to the basic principles and techniques used in modern electronic communication systems and provides a fundamental understanding of the behaviour of electromagnetic fields involved.

Content: Implementation of analogue and digital modulation Advanced communications concepts and implementation of communications links Design, realisation and applications of analogue & digital filters Advanced topics in signal processing (such as sample rate conversion)
