Within Student Support & Safeguarding work has been undertaken to create significantly revised policies and procedures for Student Discipline, Student Complaints and Health, Wellbeing and Support for Study (previously Fitness to Study). We would like to thank everyone who has participated in this process.

Fitness to Study has been re-written and re-named Health, Wellbeing and Support for Study. The new policy should not result in significant changes in staff practice, however there are some key differences that you need to be aware of, in particular any staff member involved in student support or academic progression. Student Discipline and Student Complaints have also been reviewed, primarily to make them easier to use for students. The changes to the policies will not impact staff but you should familiarise yourself with the new content and format.

Cassie Wilson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) says:

These revised policies and procedures reflect important changes to national guidance and continuous improvement to our practices. Replacing Fitness to Study with the new Health, Wellbeing and Support for Study policy more accurately reflects the policy’s purpose and links it more closely with our strategic aim of fostering an outstanding and inclusive community. The new policy sets out a compassionate and supportive process whilst also recognising the responsibility of the student and empowering them to be partners in managing their own health, wellbeing and behaviour.

Please review the new versions of these documents, and ensure you are confident in your responsibilities in relation to each of these policies. (See “Roles and Responsibilities” in each policy.)

We will be disseminating further information to relevant groups of staff regarding these changes. If you have any questions about the changes, or at any stage in applying one of the policies please contact Student Support and Safeguarding:

If you are concerned about the wellbeing of a student you can also call the Student Support staff advice line on extension 4321.
