Situated on the North of campus on the boundary of an ancient, protected woodland is ‘The Copse’. This area of woodland is a special space which predates the University by centuries. Birds and wildlife flourish here. It’s also home to our newly created memorial garden – a peaceful, wild garden looking out onto trees and shrubs.

Our memorial garden was developed with the support of our students, staff, SU, alumni and the University Chaplain. It has been designed as a dedicated area for people to come and reflect in a quiet, safe space. It’s a place to sit and remember family, friends or colleagues we have lost, and acknowledge the contribution they made to our lives.

The memorial garden will replace the practice of memorial benches, plaques and trees on campus.

Scattering of ashes

A fenced and protected landscape area with fresh flowing water has also been created for the safe and discrete scattering of ashes.

If you would like to request to scatter ashes on campus, please contact chaplaincy@bath.ac.uk.

The University of Bath Memorial Book

In 1979, we began a memorial book to record the deaths of members of University community. The University of Bath Memorial Book is housed in the University Archives and updated once each academic year with the name, degree or job title and date of death of the University member who has died.

If you would like to view the memorial book, please contact our Archivist and Records Manager on e.richmond@bath.ac.uk

Other places of remembrance on campus

Jubilee Garden

The Jubilee Garden was designed and created by the Department of Estates to commemorate 25 years of planting on the University’s Claverton Down site. Here you’ll find a rockery and seating area surrounded by a yew hedge. The garden is located in front of 4 East South.

Quiet Garden

The Quiet Garden is tucked behind 10 West and 8 West. It consists of long herbaceous borders planted with flowers that bloom at different times throughout the year. A three-tiered seating arrangement is provided for quiet reflection.

The Library Remembering Tree

The Library Remembering Tree is a mural that was commissioned to record campus commemorative tree planting and represents 80 trees planted around campus between 1966-2016. The Library Remembering Tree can be found in the library stairwell and offers an opportunity to pause and look back.
