Advancements in biotechnology and the growth of computing, data analytics, automation, and artificial intelligence (AI) are driving a new wave of innovation. This is having a significant impact on economies and our lives, from health and agriculture to energy and materials.

Sign up for our Masterclass Series: India and learn more about the connections between data science and biotechnology, and how they relate to AI and machine learning. The first two masterclasses are delivered online, with the third taking place in person, in Bangalore and Chennai.

You'll find out more about the skills and knowledge you'll need for a successful professional career in these fields, and experience first-hand the high standard of our teaching and the expertise of our academics. At the end of each masterclass, you will also be joined by University of Bath alumni, who will share their own career journeys and answer any questions you may have. Alumni joining the sessions are working with organisations such as Nature Metrics, 4basebio and Maersk.

You can sign up to individual masterclasses, or join all three and receive a certificate of completion.

The masterclass series is made up of two online webinars and an in-person event, held at two locations in January. Find out more about past events in this series.

Emergent abilities of Large Language Models: do they pose an existential threat?

Almost all Artificial Intelligence (AI) breakthroughs are driven by the set of underlying models and algorithms known as 'machine learning'. But do machine learning and AI really pose an existential threat, or do they offer the opportunity for unrivalled future prosperity?

Dr Harish Tayyar Madabushi addressed the question in the context of Large Language Models (LLM) and incorporating high-level cognitive capabilities, such as understanding and reasoning, into these models.

This event took place online on 16 January 2024.

Detecting illegal synthetic drugs with currently available technology is a major challenge. When the drugs are absorbed into physical products like paper, fabric or vape liquid, detection becomes even more difficult.

Professor Chris Pudney talked about the technology behind his novel detection device that lights up in the presence of illegal synthetic drugs soaked into paper or fabric.

This event took place online on 23 January 2024.
