Academic development: Embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Sustainability Competencies into UG and PGT programmes of study across the different faculties at the university

Project Lead: Maria del Carmen Gil Ortega, Department of Education

The project, which was funded by the Teaching Development Fund (TDF) Shape in 2022/23, the aim of this proposal is to develop, trial, and evaluate workshops designed to support academic staff to explore how links to global issues such as climate change, sustainability, and global citizenship can be embedded throughout our educational programmes. Based on staff feedback from a pilot workshop with the MA Education team, we will create two further workshops and adapt the pilot one for other staff audiences across the University. The three workshops will provide a structured and accessible way to embed the SDGs and sustainability competencies into our programmes to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to tackle current challenges. Furthermore, the workshops will aim to create a common space to discuss and design innovative pedagogies. This proposal aligns with Citizenship and Sustainability as one of the core principles of Curriculum Transformation and the Climate Action Framework. Other Departments have already shown interest in participating by trialling the workshops in selected programmes.

Marie-Carmen will report back on this project in Summer 2024.
