| Aims: To give students a knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of fluid mechanics.
Learning Outcomes: The successful student will be able to:
Determine hydrostatic forces; relate viscosity to buoyancy in considering the settlement of particles; describe the principles and practice of pressure measurement; understand the basic principles of fluid flow and the analysis of different types of flow; analyse flows in a network of pipes; understand and be able to apply dimensional analysis, and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the design of a range of open channel hydraulic structures.
Skills: Intellectual skills: Ability to apply the basic concepts and principles of fluid mechanics to the solution of engineering problems. Professional/Practical skills: To deal with basic fluid mechanics engineering issues in a systematic yet creative way, and to communicate the conclusions clearly. Transferable/key skills: Ability to collect, analyse, synthesise and present technical information. To demonstrate communication and team working skills.
Content: Properties of fluids. Hydrostatics Forces on submerged surfaces. Buoyancy and stability. Hydrodynamics. Bernoulli Equation. Applications of Bernoulli Momentum Equation. Hagen-poiseuille Laminar/Turbulent Flow. Pipe friction, losses. Pipe flow, Pipe Networks, branched pipes, Dimensional Analysis. Basic Open channel flow: normal flow, critical flow, Froude Number, surges, hydraulic jump.
