To gain experience and knowledge of civil engineering design in practice, and to report on an area for which the student has taken significant responsibility.

Learning Outcomes:
The student will have obtained extended experience of civil engineering practice, at a higher level of responsibility than is possible in the second year placement. The nature of the work will vary widely according to the placement, but the department will work with the placement employer to ensure that maximum benefit is obtained from the opportunities available.

Content:
Practical experience and first hand observation of civil engineering design, preferably in a consulting practice. The student is supported in finding an employer, but the School cannot guarantee that every student will be employed. All students will be given an academic supervisor for the duration of the unit. Students who obtain employment in the UK will normally be visited at their place of work in order to discuss the progress of their work and the potential for studying for a dissertation related to their experience. Should a student fail to obtain a placement they will be required to undertake project work at the University under the joint supervision of academic and industrial tutors.
NB. Programmes and units are subject to change at any time, in accordance with normal University procedures.
