To enable the students to:
* review, revise and begin to develop their own study skills;
* have access to ICT as a learning/working resource and tool;
* examine established frameworks and legislation in the Early Years, Children's Act, Ofsted, National Standards, National Occupational Standards, EYDCPs, Sure Start;
* identify roles and responsibilities in the workplace;
* look at learning styles, reflect on and identify own and those of the children and adults in the workplace;
* consider how children learn and the adults' role in teaching and learning;
* identify and begin to assess their own personal development needs and levels of workplace support.

Learning Outcomes:
The students will be able to:
* begin to identify appropriate methodology for research;
* identify their own learning style;
* begin to consider the learning styles of the children and adults they work with;
* identify and demonstrate some understanding of the frameworks for working in the early years sector, locally, nationally and institutionally;
* identify key skills for managing groups of adults and children;
* begin to identify and assess their own learning needs;
* identify the level and type of support available from their own workplace;
* draw up their own Personal Development Plan;
* begin to use a learning journal and reflective diary for workplace practice;
* begin to use or have an improved ability in the use of ICT as a learning/working resource and tool.

Skills:
Mainly descriptive. Obtaining, using, recording and storing information using a range of methods, informing and advising others applying appropriate methods, identifying and developing resources, including their own performance. Ability to work with others and alone, to plan their own learning programme and time management.

Content:
* This unit will introduce the student to the study skills required for working at degree level, giving them the opportunity to revise or practice skills of research, referencing, presentation of data, requirements for completing assignments. It will introduce the students to the academic rigour required in order to work effectively and successfully.
* Learning journals and the requirement of the student's Personal Development Plan will be introduced and drawn up.
* The use of ICT as a tool for teaching, learning, storing information and presenting information will be examined. Software and access to on line learning, resources and early years sites will be examined; depending on the level of experience of the students, further advice and support may be accessed within the college.
