The aims of this unit are to:
* investigate forming and shaping processes;
* investigate material removal processes;
* investigate joining processes.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students should be able to identify appropriate:

* material shaping processes;
* material removal processes;
* material joining processes.

Content:
This unit concentrates on:
* primary casting processes; sand, investment, gravity and pressure die casting;
* primary shaping processes; rolling, forging, extrusion, drawing, presswork and blanking;
* primary forming processes; injection moulding, vacuum forming, compression/transfer moulding and blow moulding;
* material removal processes; milling, turning, grinding, cutting tool materials and cutting fluids;
* welding processes; manual metal arc, oxyacetylene, metal inert gas, tungsten inert gas and spot welding;
* joining processes; brazing, soldering, adhesive bonding and mechanical fastening.
