Description:
| Aims: The aims of this unit are to:
* analyse the differing preparation requirements of production based vehicles and purpose built competition vehicles;
* demonstrate the need for continuous development to ensure vehicle competitiveness.
Learning Outcomes: On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* understand the interrelationship between the human and mechanical elements of vehicle performance;
* prepare a competition vehicle for racing and rallying;
* produce a development schedule for a competition vehicle;
* understand the preparation requirements for vehicles in defined areas of competition.
Skills: During the unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual:
* interpreting technical regulations to ensure a vehicles compliance (T,A)
* planning strategies for the continuous development of a competition vehicle (A)
Professional:
* understanding safety requirements as laid down by the Motorsport Association and the Federation International Automobile (T,A)
* working with drivers and vehicle owners to prepare competition schedules (F)
Practical:
* preparing and running a vehicle in competition (F)
Key:
* experiencing work on a variety of competition vehicles (F)
Content: This unit concentrates on:
* technical regulations
* safety requirements and regulations
* specific preparation requirements for varying motorsport disciplines
* pre and post event checks
* the development of vehicle systems to improve performance and reliability
* the role of the Scrutineer, both safety and technical.
