| Aims: To provide understanding of the principles and applications of various methods for the purification and characterisation of proteins.
Learning Outcomes: After taking this unit the student should be able to:
* Describe common methods for purifying proteins and be able to design a simple protein purification scheme;
* Describe the use of different spectroscopic techniques to probe structural features of proteins;
* Describe physical techniques used to elucidate the function and oligomeric state of proteins.

Content: Protein separation by column chromatography based on differences in molecular size, charge, hydrophobicity and specific affinity for ligands; electrophoretic methods for the purification and characterisation of proteins; use of techniques (such as fluorescence, UV/CD spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, mass spectroscopy, ITC and SPR) to probe function and oligomeric state of proteins.
