| Aims: To provide experience of the application of Biological Science and to promote understanding of the principles and practices of working in a professional environment.
Learning Outcomes: After taking this course the student should be able to:
* To take individual responsibility for a piece of work within an agreed programme;
* To organise a personal work schedule, including setting of targets and objectives;
* To carry out practical work accurately and to appropriate specifications;
* To take the necessary steps to learn a new technique; To analyse, interpret and report scientific information;
* To produce a substantial report on the institution and on the personal work programme undertaken.

Content: The placement period consists of 12 months, undertaken in an establishment, in the UK or abroad. The establishments include government-funded research institutes, commercial research establishments, public health laboratories, agricultural, food science and educational establishments. The majority of placements involve laboratory and/or field experimentation. A small number involve administrative and/or journalistic activities.
