Click here for further information Description: Aims:
Given the motivational implications of ensuring that sport and PE provide children with positive mental experiences, this course seeks to increase students' awareness of psychology in the context of youth sport and PE by:
* Introducing them to psychological constructs considered to be central to children's psychological development through sport.
* Demonstrating how significant others have a significant role to play in the development of such psychological constructs.
* Outlining the wider implications of points (a) and (b) above for sport and PE provision in general.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
* Identify and explain selected psychological constructs and theories that are central to children's experiences of sport.
* Explain why such psychological constructs are central to the youth sport experience.
* Demonstrate how parents, teachers, coaches and other social agents play a significant role in the development of children's psychological experiences.
* Show an appreciation of how provision of sport and PE might be altered in order to positively influence children's psychological experiences.

Content:
The following topics will be covered:
a) Children's moral development through sport and PE
b) Children's motivational development through sport and PE
c) The motivational climate in sport and PE
d) Experiences of anxiety in sport and PE
e) Self-esteem development through sport and PE
f) Mental skills training in children's sport and PE
