| Aims: The aims of the unit are: * to engage students in the critical examination of key contemporary social theory concepts; * to prepare students to conduct theoretically informed research in the social sciences, with a particular focus on education and/or sports & coaching; * to link students' personal research interests with a theoretical analysis of education and/ or sports & coaching. Learning Outcomes: Having studied this unit, students will be able to: * Understand the meaning of contemporary social theory as an analytical tool for qualitative social science research; * Begin to formulate their own theoretical approach to studying education and/ or sport & coaching to enhance their professional practice. Content: In this unit, students will critically analyse contemporary education, sports and coaching research that is informed by theoretical foundations in social theory. The unit will cover the following areas: * Contemporary ways of thinking about and theorising key social theory concepts; * The socio-cultural contexts of education, sport, coaching and physical activity. |
