Click here for further information Description: Aims:
To provide knowledge of Systems Engineering, Life Cycle costs, Manufacturing Engineering requirements and their place in integrated engineering, together with design for sustainability, recycling and "green" aspects. Detail of the use of different types of sensors and actuators in design solutions.

Learning Outcomes:
At the conclusion of the module the student should be equipped to tackle simple design exercises in integrated engineering covering the whole range of requirements. This will be developed by the use of case studies of increasing complexity. In these solutions there will be the need to understand the simple use of computer aids such as CAD, CAM etc.

Skills:
Knowledge of a systematic approach to design in the solution of problems in integrated engineering generally. Lateral thinking in problem solving. Computer literacy.

Content:
Introduction to aspects of systems engineering necessary for complete design solutions to today's problems, including design for manufacture, life cycle costs, sustainability etc. The Sensing-Perception-Actuation principle will be developed with detail analysis of the type of engineering measurements required in a closed loop system and the characteristics of different types of actuators. Time constants and frequency response of complete systems will be analysed and problems of line balance in manufacturing systems explored.
