Description:
| Aims: To provide an introduction to modern French literature, film, and art; to analyse a range of narrative and dramatic structures; to explore a variety of critical and theoretical approaches.
Learning Outcomes: On completion of this unit, students will be able to:
* analyse written and visual texts using a variety of different critical approaches
* compare and contrast different genres
* recognise a range of narrative and visual strategies.
Skills: Skills in critical analysis, conceptual thinking, precision in the use of written and spoken language, exercise of independent judgement, reasoned argument, and the planning/conduct/reporting of non-quantitative research are taught and assessed in this unit. Skills in effective learning and language skills are developed in this unit.
Content: The language of literature: metaphor, music and image as meaning, the nature of representation, the relationship between form and content; the language of film; the language of theatre. Texts to be studied include: Lainé, P. (1974), La Dentellière, Paris: Folio, in conjunction with the film version: Goretta, C. (1977), La Dentellière; Ionesco, E. (1954), La Cantatrice chauve, Paris: Folio.
