| Aims: To introduce quantitative aspects of noise control and to give an appreciation of some of the problems involved.
To acquaint the student with more advanced aspects of vibration.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of the unit the student will have:
* Calculated sound pressure level given relevant power and material data. Estimated the reduction in sound pressure level that could be achieved by the use of a barrier or enclosure.
* Used phase-plane plots and energy methods to analyse non-linear vibration problems.
* Applied harmonic balance to solve Rayleigh's equation to obtain limit cycle solutions and also to solve Duffing's equation and thus to explain jump phenomena.
Skills: Problem solving; numeracy; working independently.
