Click here for further information Description: Aims:
The course aims to provide students with an understanding of the main features of employment relations as they are shaped by the nature and structure of work and organisations. By considering the effect of changes in work and organisation the unit seeks to explore theoretical debates and their relevance to policy.

Learning Outcomes:
Through a variety of teaching methods the learning objectives are to achieve:
* An understanding of the context of employment relations in the UK and the wider European and international setting;
* An understanding of the social, economic and organisational forces shaping employment relations;
* An appreciation of the interplay between the key parties in employment relations;
* An understanding of the collective and individual processes and outcomes in employment relations.

Juxtaposition of theory and practice (taught )

Analysis of practical cases (taught and facilitated)
Data searching (taught and facilitated).

Content:
Employment Relations in social, economic and historical context; theoretical approaches and frames of reference in understanding employment relation; key parties to employment relations in society; management authority, trade unions and the institutional setting of their relationship, including collective bargaining, industrial conflict, and government regulation; changes in employment relations brought about by globalisation; changes in the economy and society, how these have influenced the structure of work and organisation, and the effects of these on employment relations.
