| Aims: * To review and evaluate critically the literature on poverty and social exclusion using a variety of social science perspectives; * To demonstrate a critical understanding of the policies for poverty and social exclusion in different world regions; * To enable students to identify, research and develop their own arguments in relation to poverty and social exclusion; * To develop practical skills in the analysis and evaluation of policies for poverty and social exclusion. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit students will be able to demonstrate critical understanding of the challenges of poverty and social exclusion under diverse national social, economic and political conditions, in different world regions. Skills: Ability to analyse and evaluate international policymaking experiences and outcomes in relation to poverty and social exclusion. Ability to analyse critically the relationship between local, national and global processes in relation to poverty and social exclusion. Ability to identify, research and develop arguments in specialist areas of poverty and social exclusion. Ability to undertake policy analysis and evaluation in relation to poverty and social exclusion taken from a comparative or international context. Ability to carry out independent and original analysis of concrete problems of poverty and social exclusion. Ability to analyse and synthesise multidisciplinary perspectives on the same problem.
