(to enable students to)
* develop effective and professional relationships with families;
* be able to build effective communication with families and other adults involved with the child;
* to explore and identify reasons for practitioners to work with families;
* to identify ways of working with families to promote and foster involvement in the child's learning and development in the early years setting;
* to identify other adults and agencies who may be involved with the learning and development of young children.

Learning Outcomes:
(students will be able to)
* identify and establish strategies to fully include all families in the setting;
* implement current family legislation and theories to practice;
* identify and demonstrate methods to inform and include families in the process of record keeping, the early years curriculum, policies and procedures relevant nationally, locally and institutionally;
* identify and demonstrate processes which enable families to contribute to and take part in the planning and delivery of children's learning opportunities and experiences of the setting;
* review children's progress with parents;
* communicate openly and effectively with families on a range of situations and issues.

Skills:
Analysis, reflection, information handling and organisation, accuracy, sharing knowledge effectively, team working, responsibility, and advocacy of child.

Content:
This unit will look at families in the context of a range of theories and principles, including family attitudes and belief systems, diversity in family values and practices, including cross cultural and other groupings. A range of methods for introducing families to children's learning experiences in a variety of settings will be identified and analysed. Strategies for encouraging and promoting parental involvement and effective communication in children's learning, progress and achievements will be considered. The provision of services, policies and legal frameworks for the health, welfare and development of children (and families) and their rights will be examined.
