(to enable students to)
* examine theories and principles relating to all aspects of children's development;
* identify key stages of development and children's awareness of their bodies;
* understand the concept of children's rights and develop strategies to encourage and enable children to exercise those rights;
* understand the role of routine observations and record keeping in identifying possible abuse and for evidential purposes;
* consider ways of listening to and communicating with children of all ages;
* consider the personal and emotional impact of child abuse and how to deal with disclosures;
* consider the effect of disclosure on all those involved;
* examine the possible influences which may affect children who attempt to disclose abuse.

Learning Outcomes:
(students will be able to)
* identify key stages of development and children's awareness of their bodies;
* identify and promote opportunities within daily routines for children to become aware of their bodies;
* promote the role of routine observations and record keeping in identifying possible abuse and for evidential purposes;
* respond to and deal appropriately with disclosures, including identifying sources of support;
* identify and understand the legal requirements of evidence and involving professionals in disclosure.

Skills:
Confidentiality, sensitivity, accuracy, handling information, good listener to and observer of children, working with others, communication.

Content:
This unit will consider in further depth how children develop and their behaviour. It will explore what makes some children more vulnerable to abuse and consider strategies for promoting self-care and awareness in very young children. A range of methods and processes for observation will be studied, shared and researched. All aspects of the legislative frameworks and guidance, nationally, locally and institutionally will be examined in relation to children, families, practitioners and the workplace, rights and responsibilities.
