| Aims: The unit aims to: * Understand the 'differences that make a difference' to the experience of clients in addictions counselling. * To understand how discrimination against minorities occurs and how it can be minimised. * Explore the challenges of introducing ethnic and cultural dimensions into the treatment of substance misusing populations. * Impart a basic knowledge of the principles of UK and European Law relevant to ethical and non-discriminatory practice and the upholding of human rights, as they apply to treatment services. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this unit, students will be able to: * Describe a range of minority groups in our society and the specific needs which members of such minorities may have. * Have a greater awareness of the issues associated with ethnicity, culture and human difference which must be considered when working with individual clients. * Examine their own issues associated with race, culture and human difference and how these might impact upon their interaction with clients. Skills: * Developing a cultural sensitivity. * Working with and understanding someone who is different from themselves. * Developing strategies to facilitate the entry of BME clients into the treatment process. * Essay research, preparation and writing. * The use of information technology to find, communicate and manage information. Content: This unit is concerned with raising the awareness of students to issues associated with race, culture and human difference which need to be considered if clients are to access and engage fully in the treatment of addictive disorders. |
