Click here for further information Description: Aims:
This unit will give students a thorough understanding of behaviour change, exercise prescription and diet modification, allowing for critical reflection on the importance of these for clients at risk of, or diagnosed with, CHD or obesity.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this unit students will be able to:
1. Evaluate the importance of behaviour change and exercise prescription in the treatment and prevention of CHD and obesity.
2. Explain the physiological and psychological implications of CHD and obesity.
3. Analyse the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of CHD and obesity.
4. Critically reflect on the importance of appropriate and effective exercise prescription for clients with CHD and / or obesity (including the GP referral system for exercise).

Skills:
Intellectual: (T, F & A) Knowledge of relevant theoretical concepts. Critical evaluation and analysis of behaviour change and diet, and exercise prescription to combat clinical conditions; including the ability to compare, contrast and analyse their effectiveness and the resulting implications for health.
Professional: (F) Independent research, presentation skills, report writing. Implementing behaviour change and prescribing exercise and diet modification in the workplace for relevant clients.
Practical: (T, F & A) Application of theories and appropriate exercise and diet regimes through observation, research and critical reflection to combat clinical conditions.

Content:
* Models for behaviour change: stages of change model; case study intervention; social support; exercise counselling
* Appropriate exercise prescription to tackle the risk of CHD and obesity, and the usefulness of exercise for post-coronary patients
* Physiological and psychological effects of CHD, including links to hypertension and diabetes
* Physiological and psychological effects of obesity, including links to CHD, hypertension, gall bladder disease and diabetes
* Role of diet in CHD: role of diet combined with inactivity in disease development; interventions
* Relationship between diet, exercise and obesity: role of diet combined with inactivity in increased obesity figures; interventions
* Appropriate and effective exercise regimes for treatment and prevention of CHD and obesity
* Use of the GP referral system and its links to the health and fitness industry.
