* To introduce students to 'green issues' relevant to funeral industry practice, particularly those related to the disposal of bodies.
* To introduce students to critiques of these issues.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students will be able to:
* Describe and reflect on issues surrounding environmentalism in relation to the funeral industry;
* Describe and assess the impact of environmentally-driven change on practice;
* Describe and assess the types of evidence used to assist in understanding different bodily disposal techniques.

Skills:
* To think creatively and analytically;
* To assess arguments and research;
* To relate theory and research evidence to practice;
* To identify and access a variety of other information;
* To synthesise information from a number of sources in order to gain a coherent understanding;
* To apply theory to work based practice.

Content:
Students are introduced to the major issues and trends associated with environmental concerns related to death, dying and bereavement in Western societies:
* Green/natural/woodland burial
* Environmentally friendly memorabilia
* Cremation - a solution or a problem?
* Policy, tax, emissions and the law
* Embalming and the environment
* The Natural Death Movement
* Reuse of Graves
* Alternative methods of bodily disposal.
