(to enable students to)
* to understand the theories and principles of social issues that affect a child’s development;
* to identify the diversity and range of family structures;
* to identify variations in family values and practices across cultural and other groupings;
* to study parental and child welfare, rights and legislation;
* to study the emotional issues that children may experience;
* to recognise influences that affect a child’s social and emotional development and general well-being;
* to recognise patterns of behaviour which may be linked to poor self esteem or self image.

Learning Outcomes:
(the student will be able to)
* demonstrate an understanding of social and emotional issues that influence a child’s well-being and development;
* identify children’s play behaviour which may indicate poor levels of self esteem or self worth;
* make informed decisions regarding the needs of children based on observation, assessment and records of emotional and social development;
* present and discuss information regarding a child’s emotional and social learning and development with other adults as appropriate;
* demonstrate strategies to support children in feeling safe and promoting communication in a safe, non-judgemental environment;
* demonstrate an understanding of parental responsibility, Children’s Rights and the legislative framework and guidance, nationally, locally and institutionally.

Analysis, reflection, assessment, observation, handling information, accuracy in recording, encourager and motivator of children.

Content:
This unit will study the legislation and frameworks linked to parental and child welfare and children’s rights. Students will explore how personal experience, values, beliefs and attitudes, can affect their behaviour and objectivity. Theories of self-concept and self-esteem will be explored, as will behaviourist, socialisation theory and social learning and social evolution theory. How children learn and develop in the context of a modern lifestyle, how this shapes their play, identity and role in society, will be examined.
