Follow this link for further information on unit content Description: Aims:
To develop the students ability to apply the principals of thermodynamics, heat transfer to problems of engineering importance.

Learning Outcomes:
After taking this unit the student should be able to:
Understand the thermodynamic principles, characteristics of gas turbines, steam turbines and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) cycles, together with related energy conservation and environmental issues. Solve simple heat transfer problems (including steady-state and transient conduction in solids, convection and radiation).

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy; working independently.

Content:
THERMODYNAMICS Steam plant: superheating, reheating, CHP and combined cycles. Gas turbines and jet engines: intercooling and reheating. Introduction to emissions and the environment.
HEAT TRANSFER: Heat conduction: steady-state and transient conduction in solids (including composite slabs and cylinders). Convective heat transfer: dimensional analysis and empirical correlations. Introduction to radiation.
Thermofluids laboratory experiment.
