The aim is to provide the student with an understanding of policy, planning and regulation as an environmental management tool and a detailed knowledge of how to apply it in practice.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit, students should be able to demonstrate a detailed understanding of the need to identify and understand current PPRs in a relevant framework and to be able to apply these in a practical context. An appreciation of future approaches to policy and potential shortcomings will be expected.

Skills:
Problem solving, communication skills, time management.

Content:
The unit will consist of a work file in paper format with the majority of the unit available on line. The structure of the unit will be based on themes to reflect the reality of implementing PPRs and include consideration of key interconnections. This will also help enable the students to consider the six preceding core units within a PPR framework. The structure of the unit will develop in an iterative way as the project develops and in discussion with the Associate Director of Studies and consultation with other key university staff and tutors.
The unit will require students to develop their own ongoing portfolio as they work through the six core units. The outline structure is as follows:
* Introduction to consolidation, its purpose and context, principles of sustainability
* PPR framework with hierarchy of international agreements, national legislation, policies, plans, regulation, guidance, standards to make the PPR more outline/consolidated and useful for students to find out their own PPR framework - by sector and/or country
* Consideration of PPR Themes: natural resources; ecosystem services (driven by international, EU and UK law); pollution prevention and control; climate and carbon management; land use and marine development planning; governance and participation; communities and health/well-being
* Assignment: work-based or case study.
