This unit will enable the students to implement an action research project in their setting. It will highlight the importance of evidence based practice and give students the skills to successfully plan, implement, reflect and change an aspect of their practice.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the unit the student should be able to:
* Understand, apply and evaluate a range of research methods and techniques;
* Evaluate existing research in terms of its contribution to emerging theory and principles of good practice in the work place;
* Undertake a literature review to identify existing research, which would inform the practice-based enquiry
* Plan, implement and evaluate a small-scale practice based enquiry;
* Recognise the limits and effects of their own knowledge and skills in undertaking a small-scale piece of research.

Intellectual
* Identifying a research problem to be investigated or task to be performed [TA]
* Ability to undertake a literature search to identify existing research on a topic related to early years or children [TA]
Professional/Practical
* Solve theoretical and practical problems that have occurred, or are likely to occur,
* when carrying out the role of a Senior Practitioner within Early Years or when
* working in support of a teacher [F]

* Collation of the information necessary for investigating a research problem [TA]
* Analysis of comparative issues necessary for investigation and project completion [TA]
* Ability to assess validity of research sources related to the work place [TA]
* Development of the skill of writing an argument [TA]

Content:
This unit will explore the application of a range of methods and methodologies appropriate to workplace settings. In particular it will consider the application of the multi-method approach and listening to children. It will discuss and explore the limitations of a small scale action research project. It will identify and examine the ethical considerations of carrying out primary research and consider the rights of children, parents and practitioners. It will discuss the importance of producing a critical, reflective research report.
