Follow this link for further information on unit content Description: Aims:

* To outline the basic principles of static, kinematics and dynamics applied to the mechanical characterisation of hard and soft tissues;
* To give an understanding of forces and moments acting on human joints;
* To introduce the application of tribology to natural and replaced joints;
* To develop the student's appreciation of the biomechanical issues associated with implant fixation.

Learning Outcomes:
After successful completion of this unit the student will be able to:
* Give examples of the applications of mechanics in a biological and clinical context;
* Predict forces and motions in human joints, and to provide examples of the mechanical properties of a variety of hard and soft tissue structures;
* Recognise the functional requirements of replacement joints;
* Appraise the tribological constraints of natural and replacement joints;
* Present the principles of fixation of artificial joints;
* Assess the performance of replacement joints in the aggressive environment of the human body.
