To provide students with a full appreciation of the psychological processes involved in the consultation, provision of treatment and its effects on subsequent behaviour and health in different settings and contexts.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit, students will:
* Demonstrate their ability to evaluate different contexts in which health care is delivered
* Appreciate the impact of communications and be able to make recommendations about how these might be improved
* Be able to assess the psychological impact of health professional behaviour on patient outcomes
* Be able to evaluate the different factors involved in choosing health care.

Content:
The unit aims to provide students with a full appreciation of the psychological processes involved in the consultation, in the provision of treatment and its effects on subsequent behaviour, and health in different settings and contexts.
Beliefs, expectations and preparation for treatments with particular reference to risk perception primary health care and screening. Help seeking, help giving and self-help. Communications between provider and patient including bad news. The context of treatment in institutions, surgeries and hospices.
