Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the organic chemistry associated with important biomolecules such as amino acids, peptides, carbohydrates and natural products and enable them to achieve an understanding of the synthetic chemistry associated with making these compounds.

Learning Outcomes:
After studying the Unit, students should be able to:
* Show an awareness of the importance of these molecules.
* Demonstrate an understanding of the nature of the structure and bonding intrinsic to these molecules.
* Demonstrate an understanding of the synthetic techniques used in making peptide bonds, glycosidic bonds and important natural products.
* Show an understanding of the different synthetic pathways that can be used in the synthesis of these molecules.

Skills:
Problem solving (T, F, A), Independent working (F).

Content:
The importance of peptides, carbohydrates and natural products and the methods used to synthesise these in the laboratory; new uses of these biomolecules.
