Further information on requisites Requisites: Before taking this unit you must take MA20219, MA20217 and at least three units from MA30039, MA30041, MA30055, MA30056, MA30231, MA30237. It may be possible (with DoS approval) to take this unit in the third year with MA30039 and MA30041 as co-requisites.
Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aim of this unit is to enable students to learn about topics in pure mathematics which are of interest to contemporary researchers and, in doing so, develop their ability to investigate, discuss and write about advanced mathematical topics.

Learning Outcomes:
By taking this unit, students will learn:
* how to investigate current knowledge by literature search in academic journals, the arXiv, and other online resources;
* how to extract and assimilate information about advanced mathematical topics;
* how to discuss and write about such topics;
* about techniques of pure mathematical research;
* about topics of contemporary interest to pure mathematicians.

Skills:
Written Communication T/F A, Information Technology T/F A.

Content:
The unit will be convened by one or more mathematical academics, who will introduce at least three topics of current interest for research mathematicians. The topics may be related, or have common background. There will be lectures and/or discussion seminars on each topic as appropriate, during which process students will choose a topic to research in more detail. Assessment will be adapted to the topics by the convenors in accordance with the aims and learning outcomes.
