To provide students with the key skills required for electronic systems design automation.
To be able to use electronic design tools including schematic capture, integrated circuit layout, simulation (analogue and digital), synthesis and post processing.
Understand the key processes in design automation including simulation, layout and synthesis.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
Understand, design and critically appraise electronic system design processes.
Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the key concepts in design automation.
Be able to apply design automation techniques to solve design problems.
Demonstrate ability to deal with complex design issues and critically analyse information using professional simulation and design tools.
Apply design tools to independently develop an individual design.

Skills:
Numeracy: Analysis of Electronic Circuits (TFA).
Use IT to collect, analyse and present technical information; solve problems, communicate effectively and retrieve information (TFA).
Use appropriate professional simulation and design tools (TFA).
Employ a range of established and new techniques to review and critically analyse information concerning engineering problems, and to propose and implement solutions in a professional manner (FA).

Content:
Theory and practice of analogue IC design using hardware description languages and schematic capture.
Design of electronic systems using analogue and digital simulation.
Optimization and synthesis of designs.
Validation of designs using test benches and verification techniques.
Parasitic extraction and analysis.
