Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
The aims of this unit are to acquire an understanding of (a) recent advances on therapeutic drug monitoring, (b) variability in ADME processes and (c) individualized drug therapy based on pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and pharmacogenomic principles.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit, the student should be able to: (a) critically evaluate elements of clinical pharmacokinetics and apply them to therapeutic drug monitoring and drug therapy; (b) predict and analyze the effect of variability (disease, genetics, adherence, age etc.) on a therapy outcome and (c) critically analyse and discuss scientific pharmacokinetic data and apply it to drug therapy.

Content:
This unit focuses on clinical pharmacokinetics, sources of variability in drug therapy and therapeutic drug monitoring. This will include: (a) the scientific basis for therapeutic drug monitoring and individualized therapy. Application to relevant drugs in practice and recent advances in the field. (b) Variability in the ADME processes caused by disease, age, obesity, interactions, life style and genetics. (c) Use of pharmacokinetics and PK parameters to interpret drug variability and individualize therapy.
