Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
This unit aims to introduce students to the systematic approach to chemical engineering design, skills and practice by carrying out an integrated design of a continuous flow set-up and its construction at lab-scale.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit students should be able to:
i. Apply basic chemical engineering knowledge into research
ii. Develop engineering problem-solving skills for the design of experimental set-ups
iii. Make process decisions about the main parameters of the design
iv. Identify suitable equipment and control systems used in engineering labs at research scale and control systems
v. Develop risk assessments and Hazop studies for continuous rigs.

Skills:
Analysis and problem solving
Creativity
Taught/facilitated and assessed.

Content:
A combination of lectures and workshop/lab based learning:
* Introduction to chemical engineering design
* Key parameters for continuous flow experimentation (concentration, residence time, pressure drop)
* Design of process flowsheet: the process flow diagram. Introduction to Visio.
* Equipment and instrumentation
* Control of process parameters (temperature, pressure and flow)
* Introduction to lab design and workshop construction.
