Poetry is often treated as a genre set apart and hard to access, but recent poetic practice in French, in very diverse ways, demonstrates that poetry is inseparable from other genres of writing, and other arts, media and disciplines.

We have two principal aims:

  1. To pursue research in the field of contemporary poetry in French and its interdisciplinary connections.
  2. To forge connections between researchers, practitioners and readers that will promote and enable the creation of innovative new poetic work.

Researchers and practitioners will meet at five themed study days to hear invited papers, develop ideas through discussion, and encounter poetic practice at accompanying open-access events:

  1. Poetry, philosophy, and politics, Maison Française d’Oxford, UK (26 April 2013) with poetry performances by Sabine Macher and Jean-Marie Gleize.
  2. Poetry and translation, centre international de poésie, Marseille, France (19-20 September 2013) with practical translation workshop led by Stephen Romer and Jennie Feldman.
  3. Poetry and new technologies, Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, UK (17 January 2014) with virtual exhibition of digital poetry.
  4. Poetry and the visual arts, Magdalene College, Cambridge, UK (4 April 2014) with exhibition of visual work inspired by poetry.
  5. Poetry, music, and performance, University of Birmingham, UK (11 July 2014) with performance by Jean-Luc Tamby, Emilie Yaouanq and Thierry Machuel of music composed by Machuel and inspired by poetry.
