The 6 West South Learning Commons is temporarily closed from today, as work begins to transform the space into the new Woodland Lounge.

The Woodland Lounge will offer significant improvements aimed at fostering community. The redesigned space will feature a carefully managed sensory environment with comfortable areas for both study and relaxation.

Key improvements include:

  • making the west side accessible entrance the main entry point, improving access for everyone
  • creating comfortable, flexible spaces for study and relaxation with thoughtful sensory design
  • installing adjustable lighting, enhanced noise absorption and cosy, supportive seating
  • adding amenities such as hot and cold water facilities to support longer stays and student wellbeing

The project draws on expertise from across the University, including the Library.

Campus Services is leading the design and refurbishment process, working closely with key stakeholders such as the Disability Action Group (DAG) and Student Support to ensure accessibility and inclusivity.

The Students’ Union has also played an important role, contributing student feedback and practical ideas to enhance the overall experience.

When completed, the Woodland Lounge will support the University in accomplishing The SU Top 10, one priority of which focuses on the need for neuroinclusive university hospitality and study spaces.

During the refurbishment, the nearest alternative study space is available in the Library.

Further details will be announced soon regarding the Woodland Lounge's official opening date.
