The Foundation Future Leaders Programme aims to support the next generation of leaders in science, technology, research and innovation in building their understanding and links to other parts of the UK’s research and innovation system.
Launched in 2019, the programme brings together a cohort of 35 early- to mid-career professionals from the research community, industry and the civil service and wider public sector. Over the course of a year, the group will take part in:
- Meetings with senior figures from science and technology across government, Parliament, industry, universities, academies and charities.
- Visits, which could include UK Parliament in London and the Harwell research campus in Oxfordshire. Other possible visits include research facilities for companies, national laboratories, international science facilities and devolved bodies.
- Fortnightly drop-in sessions.
- Organising the 2025 Foundation Future Leaders conference.
The Institute for Policy Research (IPR) holds membership with the Foundation for Science and Technology, which enables our staff to apply as well as to take part in their monthly online events and annual conference.
Who can apply
The scheme is designed for people in the early part of their ‘mid-career’. In general, applicants should be beyond any graduate training scheme, but not yet at senior management levels. For university researchers, this could be people at Lecturer/Assistant Professor or Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor levels.
The Foundation Future Leaders scheme will suit researchers who wish to make links with and understand how science, research, and innovation are used in government, parliament, industry, and universities, and how research and industry can support policy development.
The closing date for applications is 18 November 2024.
Colleagues wanting to discuss the programme or their application are welcome to email Amy Thompson, Head of Policy Programmes and Communications in the IPR: at712@bath.ac.uk.
