The University is saddened to learn of the death of Dr Julian Widdowson, Clinical Director of the Department for Health’s MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine course.

Julian joined the University as a Lecturer in 2014 and became Clinical Director of our Sport and Exercise Medicine course in October 2016.

Julian was a Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultant and graduate of our MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine course. He was a team doctor across professional rugby; England Saxons; Bath Rugby; Gloucester Rugby and the Welsh Rugby Union; and most recently football, with West Bromwich Albion. He also developed a speciality in Dance Medicine.

Dr Polly McGuigan, Head of Department for Health, said: “Julian was a hugely well respected and liked member of the Sport and Exercise Medicine community.

“He guided the clinical aspects of the course with enthusiasm and skill, sharing his huge range of experiences with students and staff. He will be very sorely missed and our deepest condolences go to the Widdowson family and all his friends”

We know that Julian’s death will affect colleagues and students and a range of support is available:
