At the University of Bath, we’re committed to making travel to and from our campus effective, inclusive, sustainable and future-ready. Whether you're staff, a student, or visitor, we know that getting to campus can be challenging. That’s why we’re launching a refreshed University Travel Plan.
Since our last Travel Plan in 2016, much has changed in and for our university community. We have had to embrace changes to the ways that we work, including flexible working for many staff and more online or hybrid learning opportunities for students.
We're acutely aware of the challenges many individuals face when it comes to travel choices such as increased living costs, caring responsibilities, accessibility needs and access to realistic alternative choices. We know that staff and students are presented with commuting challenges, including difficulties finding parking spaces and capacity in our local bus services.
The University has set out ambitious goals on climate change, health and wellbeing, and these compel us to rethink how we enable travel to and from the campus, reduce emissions, and improve local air quality.
We have grown over time as a University and project further growth to come. We're approaching this in a planned and sustainable way but this does put pressure on our space and increases the challenges for all modes of travel and for transport infrastructure.
We’ve gathered data on how our community travels and, now, we want to hear directly from you. Your experiences will help us shape the next measures we take to meet the objectives set out in this plan.
Complete our survey to share your travel habits, challenges, and ideas.
We know that change can feel daunting. Not every solution will work for everyone, and that’s why equity is at the heart of this plan. We’re committed to supporting those who can make a change, and listening to those who face barriers.
We’ve already taken initial steps, like working with First Bus to introduce new bus routes this year, to make travel more reliable. But this is just the beginning.
The aims of a new Travel Plan
The updated Travel Plan aims to:
- enable effective and efficient movement of people to and from University sites, taking into consideration potential future growth
- improve the inclusivity, equitability, and positive impact of travel on our community
- maximise health and wellbeing benefits related to travel for our community
- reduce emissions associated with travel to and from University sites

Have your say
The Travel Plan is informed by existing data on how staff and students commute – we've gathered this from surveys over a number of years. Now we want to hear directly from you.
Your feedback will help us to better understand what affects your travel choices and will shape the actions we take going forward. Your answers will be kept anonymous.
Complete the Travel Plan survey by Sunday 19 October at 9pm.
Once you have completed the survey you will be given two follow up options:
- you can enter into a prize draw for a chance to win one of four £100 Bath City Gift Cards as a thank you for completing the survey
- you will be invited to complete additional follow up questions and to take part in focus groups – these are optional and form part of a research study
Your contact details entered for both of these will be held separately from the main survey content to ensure it remains anonymous.
Travel advice and support
In the survey, we will ask you about different travel modes and your access to them. The University provides advice and support to staff and students and you may find the following information useful to refer to.
- view general travel advice
- view tailored advice for travelling by bus, by foot, bike or scooter, and travelling to the city
- access support for staff commuting
- read the campus accessibility guide to find out about disabled parking, accessible routes around campus and the accessibility of our buildings and facilities
