The Campus Services team has been busy this summer, sorting large amounts of donated items left in student accommodation.

Over 400 crates of items were collected, including:

  • 72 crates of food
  • over 120 crates of crockery and kitchen items
  • 10 crates of electrical items

What happens to donated items

The items were sorted, cleaned and donated to the following locations:

  • the Community Larder on campus, for students and staff to take
  • local charity The Genesis Trust
  • many items are donated to estranged students moving into University accommodation in September
  • repurposed kitchen crockery and other household items are available to buy online. They will also be available at our Sustainability Stalls held on 20 and 21 September

"We are always looking at different ways we can reduce our environmental impact," says Andrew Nash, Head of Campus Services Facilities. "Collecting, sorting and cleaning the thousands of items students have left behind is a huge amount of work for our team. However, it's an incredibly important part of our Leave No Trace initiative and in helping to meet the wider University's sustainability goals."

A big thank you

The project has been led by the Campus Services Facilities team. The portering team, intern students, Chaplaincy, Climate Action Framework team, The SU RAG Society, Retail, Hospitality and ResLife Operations have also provided valuable help.

We also extend our thanks to the staff volunteers from other various departments. If you would like to volunteer to help with this project in the future, email Liz Russell or Susanna Terruso.
