The University is particularly concerned to learn about recent incidents of racism online suffered by members of our student community over the last few days, including the use of abhorrent racist language.

It is an uncomfortable truth that racism exists across our society and country, whether here in Bath or within online communities.

There is no defence for racism and we condemn it unreservedly.

We reaffirm our commitment to tackling all forms of harassment and discrimination and to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment characterised by mutual respect. We will stand by and support members of our community that experience racism in any form.

We encourage all our students and staff to be active allies and if you have further information about this online abuse, you can report it through our Report and Support tool or talk to the SU’s Advice Service.

If you have been particularly affected by these events, please do not hesitate to ask for support. Our Wellbeing Advisors are here to help any student who needs support at this time. Our Employee Assistance Service is there to help our staff members.

Through our Race Equality Taskforce and the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, we are committed to working positively with students and staff to understand the barriers and discrimination faced by black and minority ethnic members of our community. We will carry on making the changes needed to continue building a University where difference is respected and celebrated.
