We are a group of Academic Staff involved in Computer Science teaching who have an interest in pedagogic research.

Introduction to the group

The Computer Science Education Group (CSEG) aims to promote, support and develop learning and teaching activity within the Department, across the University and nationally.

Members of the Education Group

Members of the Computer Science Education Group (CSEG) contribute extensively to research, leadership, and national initiatives in computer science education.

Highlights include:

  • Dr John Benardis, in collaboration with Professors James Davenport and Alan Hayes, published a textbook chapter on formative assessment
  • Davenport and Hayes also authored a Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) report on employability skills in the Computer Science curriculum
  • Dr Paola Bruscoli’s research was cited in the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS) October 2025 bulletin
  • Dr Moody Alam, with Benardis and Hayes, led an employability workshop at the Association for Computing Machinery, Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education Practice conference
  • Alam, Benardis and Dr Bhagy Patil joined the The Chartered Institute for IT (BCS) Early Career Network Steering Group
  • Professor Alan Hayes chaired the national review of the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement in Computing
  • Dr Jo Hyde leading on the 2026 BCS Ada Lovelace event

Our aims and objectives

We work to enhance Computing Science education by improving opportunity, practice, research, and leadership, ensuring it becomes a strong mainstream subject that benefits learners, educators, industry, and society.

CSEG will develop its vision to:

  • develop a community of practice that benefits from close collaboration with our National Teaching Fellows, Fellows of the Higher Education Academy (covering Associate, Fellow, Senior and Principal Fellowships) and academics in the Department of Computer Science whose main focus and interest is in the teaching of the respective discipline
  • promote the benefits of embedding a research informed approach in teaching and learning activities
  • mentor those wishing to engage with pedagogical research and development as part of their teaching and learning practice
  • collate resources, good practice and provide opportunities to celebrate department pedagogic outputs internally, nationally and internationally
