Discover Evoscope: an educational package that’s transforming how we learn evolution

Evoscope is a free educational resource pack that helps you bring evolution to life and assess understanding and acceptance of evolutionary concepts.

Welcome to Evoscope

Hands-on educational resources that help you bring evolution to life in real time.

Evoscope is an exciting educational package created by the University of Bath, in partnership with the Evolution Education Trust. It’s designed to captivate and inspire, empowering students to explore evolution firsthand through a dynamic, inquiry-based approach—bringing the process of evolution to life in real time.

As well as receiving the free resources and support you need to run hands-on lessons in evolution, you'll be helping us explore how different teaching methods impact how students understand and accept evolution.

So far, not much has been done to explore learning experiences outside of mainstream education. We want participants from diverse alternative education settings to give a broader understanding of educational experiences.

Whether you’re working with students in primary and secondary schools, alternative and home education sites, museums, science centres and informal learning centres, or virtual or online schools, Evoscope can help you.

What you'll receive

Training for Educators

We know teaching evolution can feel daunting, but you don’t need to be a scientist to run engaging and effective evolution lessons. As part of our study, we offer free, ongoing training for educators, both in person and online. We want to give you the confidence and support to bring evolution to life and inspire your students.

Practical package

Participating educators will receive a complete resource package, including physical materials and online support. Resources are designed to be accessible, safe and easy to use, allowing students to gather evidence and engage in science in their learning environment.

Assessment package

You’ll also get an online assessment package to help gauge students’ understanding of evolution. Unlike traditional tests, our assessment game encourages participation while providing valuable learning insights. All data collected will fully comply with GDPR regulations, ensuring privacy and security.

The study

By signing up for our resource package, you'll be helping us explore how different teaching methods impact students' understanding and acceptance evolution. Our study will compare a practical group using hands-on learning activities, with a theory group focussing on conceptual understanding, and an active learning group, which previous studies have shown significantly impacts learning.

Participants will play an assessment game to gauge their knowledge before and after the study. A game instead of traditional tests helps participants feel more comfortable and allows for a more accurate and inclusive assessment of learning outcomes. We’ll also ask students questions about their thoughts and experiences on the study.

Who can join

We're looking for participants from a wide range of alternative education settings, including primary and secondary schools, alternative and home education sites, museums, science centres and informal learning centres, and virtual or online schools.
