To provide the basic principles of environmental design, with the aim to minimise the impact of buildings on the environment while maintaining human well-being within the building, primarily through passive means.

Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this Unit, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of environmental design through integration of environmental issues in their studio.

Skills:
Analytical skills and drawing presentations of technical aspects.

Content:
Formal lectures on modifications of local climate by topography, passive heating and cooling, ventilation and indoor air quality, daylighting design, atria and simplified modelling techniques for buildings' energy consumption. Tutorials will also be provided. The Unit will be integrated with the Project of the Design Studio, where knowledge of these principles will have to be demonstrated.
