The aims of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of instrumentation systems consequently they will investigate process control systems/controllers and regulating units.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the unit students should be able to:
* Evaluate a range of sensors/transducers used in control systems in terms of their performance, limitations and suitability for given applications;
* Evaluate techniques and theories used in process control;
* Justify the use of appropriate regulating units in terms of their specifications and performance characteristics.

Skills:
During this unit students should gain the following skills:
Intellectual
* gathering, processing and critically analysing technical information (F,T,A)
* synthesise and evaluate information in order to formulate outcomes (F,T,A)
Professional
* making appropriate judgements, written presentations (A)
Practical
* developing identification and observational skills to maintain records and contribute to reports (T,A)
* carrying out practical and evaluative investigations of engineering systems (F,A)
Key
* writing reports (A)
* applying analytical techniques (T,A)
* using graphs and tables to present experimental results (F,A)

Content:
This unit focuses on:
* construction and operation of sensors for temperature, speed, pressure, level, flow;
* signal conditioners;
* display units;
* process control terminology;
* tuning/calibration;
* standard/block diagrams - open/closed loop control;
* parts of regulating units;
* performance characteristics of hardware including manufacturers specifications.
