The course aims to give a broad overview of major features of human resource management. It examines issues from the contrasting perspectives of management and employees and explores some contemporary policy issues.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, the student should be able to:
* Understand the main theoretical issues surrounding HRM
* Understand basic HR functions;
* How HR functions impact individual and organisational performance;
* Understand the practical key elements of HR;
* Appreciate some contemporary issues in HRM practice
* Understand the development and context of HRM in the UK.

Skills:

* Understanding of theory and critical debates in HRM field (T/A)
* A critical awareness of current theoretical and practical issues in HRM field (T/A).
* Ability to understand and analyse the fit between various HR practices and organisational and individual outcomes; (T/A)
* Ability to communicate during in-class case study analyses and practical examples (T/F).
* Critical engagement with the subject matter and examples of practice, including own experience (F/A)
* Ability to apply subject-specific knowledge into a range of situations such as case studies, exercises, real life examples (T/F/A)
* Ability to apply and analyze case studies, in-class practical exercises and real life examples to HRM theory (T/F/A).

HRM and organisational performance, Recruitment, Selection, Negotiation, Training and Development, Performance Management, Turnover and Downsizing, International HRM, Contemporary issues in HRM.
