Further information on descriptions Description: Aims:
To introduce the analytical techniques that are used in the analysis and design of control systems.
To examine the behaviour of a variety of control systems commonly used in engineering applications.

Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this unit the student will have:
* Predicted the behaviour of simple control systems.
* Determined the frequency response and stability characteristics of simple control systems.
* Improved steady state and dynamic performance using compensation techniques.

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy; working independently.

Content:
System modelling. Open and closed loop control. Block diagram representation. Block diagram manipulation. Transfer functions and Laplace notation. Transient performance of simple systems. System errors. Frequency response representation of systems. Bode diagrams. System stability assessment techniques. System identification. Compensation techniques. Introduction to MATLAB® for control system design and analysis. Control laboratory experiment.
