To develop an understanding of manufacturing process planning.
To develop expertise in the design of computer integrated manufacturing systems.
To develop expertise in CNC programming and CAM.
To gain understanding of automation and process control.

Learning Outcomes:
After successfully completing this unit the student will be able to:
* Plan operations for product manufacture.
* Produce NC part programs for lathes and milling machines.
* Choose appropriate integrated CAD/CAM software for a given production scenario.
* Use a CAM system to generate CNC manufacturing instructions for a prismatic part.
* Use a CAM system to generate CNC manufacturing instructions for a cylindrical part.
* Use a CAM system to generate CNC manufacturing instructions for sculptured surfaces.
* Design suitable work holding arrangements.
* Explain the link between productivity and process planning.

Skills:
Problem solving; numeracy: IT; working independently; written communication.

Content:
Syllabus: Process planning and time estimating. Assembly planning. Planning to meet tolerance requirements. The design and choice of jigs, fixtures, tooling and gauges. Historical aspects of NC. Types of NC system. Machine tool controllers.
Machine level programming. APT part programming. Computer aided part programming. Integrated CAD/CAM systems. Practical usage of a CAM system (e.g. Siemens NX Manufacturing) for planning, processing and manufacturing machined metal components. System design and evaluation, methodology and gauging systems. Case study on NC machining and its applications. Case study on process planning and material handling. Topics for self study that may be examined.
